Why is the Road Base Under the Pavement So Important?

Asphalt pavement remains the most versatile, effective, and of course most durable of all the other types of pavement coverings. It requires a different installation method than the rest where the hot liquid asphalt is mixed with an aggregate component before it is layered on the road and allowed to cool. However, some people do not know the importance of these processes and how things like the road base under the pavement could be so important.

Well, it is a very important part of the installation, and getting that right could mean longevity of the asphalt-based surface you're looking to install. The base layer or road base is highly important and it is typically recommended to support the traffic that is created by the construction process. The base layer is very important and would support the asphalt from construction traffic as well as provide uniformity of support to the pavement surface.

The base layer is also used to typically protect the pavement from frost heave effects, as well as improve the construction of the pavement surface. Road bases are usually constructed out of an accumulation of crushed aggregates to provide additional support to the surface.

Hot Mix Asphalt Cure Time is Important

Hot mix asphalt is a type of asphalt mix that is used for paving surfaces. Asphalt concrete that is used for paving surfaces typically has a curing time. This time varies greatly on several factors like the thickness of the mixture, the type of mix, the weather conditions, and others. Hot mix asphalt cure time is the time taken from the application to when it is ready. This is a very important factor in its application and why it is very much used when constructing pavement surfaces.

Hot mix asphalt is said to be traffic ready after it has been rolled and compacted to the right density. Also, after it has been cooled enough that it is not liquid anymore. This, however, doesn't mean it is cured, it just simply means that the mix has hardened. Emulsions and solvents that have been added for flow and density would either evaporate over time or become a part of the mix.

The specifications of the project would help the contractor know when the curing time would be. This curing time could be the cooling or aging time but in the case of cold mix asphalt, it is the time taken for it to harden.

Proper Thickness and Compactness are Needed

When creating an asphalt pavement, proper thickness and compactness are needed as it is certain to help improve the quality of your asphalt-based pavement.

Research has shown that proper compacting and thickness of your asphalt surface is a great and often underestimated factor in improving the density of your asphalt-based pavement. Three major factors that affect the density and longevity in other words of asphalt are how the compacting is done.

The thickness and compacting specifications are highly important when discussing pavement surfaces. Proper thickness and compactness are needed for finality and ensuring that your asphalt-based surface is solid and would last you a long time.
